Week 2- Positionality

As an interior and spatial design student, in university we are encouraged to think about how the design or space can be accessible for everyone and collaborating on designs will improve a design as it encourages different approves from a variety of people whether this is race, ability or age.my positionality is shaped by my experiences working in creative studios and studying interior design. I value inclusivity, accessibility, and collaboration, and these values guide how I observe and design spaces often focusing on how people interact with space and how design can foster community and wellbeing. I recognise that my creative background is a little different to how an office may work, the office I am in is very open to collaborating and taking different viewpoint to improve aa design. But I am also able to see that when an office doesn’t have a

massive range of people it can limit a design or make this design not accessible to everyone, in my current placement it is a small office of similar age workers, and I can see this creates a different design/brief than when I was at university often focusing on how people interact with space and how design can foster community and wellbeing.

This week, I began taking detailed measurements of the entire studio space to prepare for producing accurate floor plans. Using a laser measure and tape, I recorded all key dimensions, including wall lengths, door and window placements, and ceiling heights. Accuracy was important at this stage, as the floor plans will form the base for redesign concepts and furniture layouts. After collecting the measurements, I transferred the data into AutoCAD to begin creating the first set of floor plans for the space. This process helped me improve my technical drawing skills and understand how physical spaces translate into digital plans. It also gave me insight into how precision and organisation are essential in professional design workflows. I’ve also started to see how my 3D design and technical drawing skills can be applied to real projects, from developing concepts to producing plans ready for fabrication. This week has given me a strong foundation for the rest of my placement and a clear sense of what I’ll be contributing to the team.
