Overview

During my first week at the placement, I was introduced to the studio’s ongoing projects and given a brief outlining my responsibilities and the expectations for the next two months within JOY! Collective as a company. As this was the beginning of the placement here this was a chance, I also was able discussed the skills I could contribute and the areas I hoped to develop. The studio is an open space that is in the train arches in Hoxton, this was a great opportunity to work with a space I haven’t worked with before with the solid brick structure. this is a multifunction studio, but the team shared their concept for redesigning and optimising the office space, explaining the creative direction and hopes for this space. I was encouraged to observe and help with a range of tasks to build on my technical and creative abilities.

During my first week, I’ve gained an understanding of how a creative studio operates day to day and how different roles come together on a project. I’ve been able to observe live client work and be able to get hands on in a 3D installation for an office in Barbican and get an insight into the planning process behind installations and exhibitions.

I’ve also started to see how my 3D design and technical drawing skills can be applied to real projects, from developing concepts to producing plans ready for fabrication. This week has given me a strong foundation for the rest of my placement and a clear sense of what I’ll be contributing to the team.

While also being able to get involved taking content for their social media, this was to promote JOY! Collectives Christmas workshop that they hold. I really enjoyed testing their workshops that consisted of Christmas wreath making and Christmas card making as I was able to see how workshops come together behind the scenes and get to know the team.
